This functioning engine, specially adapted for educational purposes, offers your trainees a safe learning procedure which closely follows modern practice and which will eventually lead to effective training of fundamental diagnostic skills in relation to engines. The trainees work on a real engine equipped with the latest Bosch EDC version. This means that a trainee may be confronted with some complex engine management and modern sensors. The working engine is based on a VW TDI engine with a cylinder capacity of 1.6 l or 2.0 l and four cylinders. It also features a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry and a water-cooled intercooler built into the intake manifold. The intake pipe itself has a throttle valve control unit which is used in conjunction with a low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system. The engine also allows diagnostics to be carried out on a modern exhaust gas purification system, which includes a particulate filter, an oxidation catalytic converter and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) converter.
By means of the optional supplementary package (SO3240-3J), the engine can also be equipped with a fault simulation switching module, which enables multiple system faults to be emulated by turning on switches. Such faults can be read out from the standard OBD system and subsequently diagnosed using a variety of measurements.

This supplementary package is to be installed into a functioning engine before delivery and makes it considerably more valuable. In addition to a break-out box, a switch box for fault simulation and an enhanced CAN simulation module are also installed. The fault simulation module makes it possible to temporarily switch simulated faults into effect in all parts of the engine. This involves switching in breaks or junction resistances. Thanks to the enhanced CAN simulation, it is possible to guarantee that the engine management controller will be fail-safe. Thus the combined instrument may merely display those faults affecting the lighting system (or similar) in the vehicle
